Why White Poverty Matters • Historically, even the poorest white South Africans had access to economic protections and employment through state-controlled industries or civil service. • Since the end of apartheid, many unskilled or less-educated whites lost their protections. Laws aimed at redressing past injustices — such as affirmative action and economic empowerment policies — have, in practice, left some white families unable to compete for jobs. • Organizations like Solidarity estimate that as many as 450,000 white people live in poverty, with many residing in informal settlements or so-called “white squatter camps.” • Although overall poverty in South Africa mostly impacts Black South Africans, recognizing white poverty doesn’t negate that — it just expands our understanding of who needs assistance and challenges stereotypes about poverty and race.
